13.0

August 29, 2009

so, i kind of broke* linux just a few minutes ago. but that’s okay, because i’ve been thinking about trying out a new distro. arch? mint? something that has kde4, at least. so i head on over to distrowatch, and what is at the top of the page? slackware 13.0 has arrived. and it has kde4. damn! so do i try a new distro, or do i faithfully install slack 13?

* i’m pretty sure i didn’t do anything special to screw it up. just don’t use terminal emulators in konquerer, for future reference. all i know is that uid 1001 took over all processes. you know that something bad is bound to happen when you go “su” and bash returns with “Sorry”. inittab file is missing, apparently. and logging in to do stuff is not an option.

[edit]

apparently, the entire /etc folder is gone! WTF?? that’s like… where fstab, lilo.conf, and module loading files are… why did it disappear??

woman blocks ahmadinejad. what’s the bet they threw her in jail? reminiscent of the tiananmen square photo.

fox news likes to pretend that unfaithful republicans are actually democrats.

everyone is RIPping about how michael jackson died. what about the kid who was beaten to death by his father???

went through the first disk of the audiobook of ‘doppelganger’ by michael parker. yay. what a pleasant surprise to hear it narrated in an australian accent.

hey, i’m watching my fingers type on the mirrored reflection in the window!

i like my ME CAD class. computer-aided design is so cool.

ahmadinejad re-elected; protests flare.

it’s like the 2004 election in the u.s. when bush won. except we didn’t have street protests, which, in retrospect, might have been appropriate.

on transgender injustice, trial for the murder of lateisha green receives total media blackout, and transgender woman assaulted by teenagers in seattle. fucking kids. however, “kids don’t learn how to hate out of thin air” (feministe&lt).

relaxation time!

June 8, 2009

done with two, rather difficult finals! studying physics all weekend helped a little bit, and not studying mechanics didn’t help at all. mechanics was harder than i expected. long. heh, the prof said he wrote the test at 1am.

so tired. a headache seems to be unsure of whether to manifest itself or not. i feel too icky to take a nap.

return to l-word!!

i’m sitting in the mary gates computer lab. two taiwanese boys are on the other side of the table, speaking in taiwanese-chinese with occasional bits of not-badly-accented english as they talk about games and girls (pop stars, presumably). oh taiwanese boys. just the accent brings back a sort of nostalgia. just hearing them speak gives me a colloquial feeling, makes me want to relax.

but no! ahead of me, i have much cramming to do in the way of studying.

1. learn this cee beam stuff, get a grip on all the equations and problem-solving, and do the homework. hopefully, i’ll figure it out.
2. physics. ugh. i’m tempted to spend an infinite amount of time on this class at the expense of my other classes, but there’s a good chance that my efforts will be futile, so why should i bother… nevertheless, there will be bonding time with my *four* quantum mechanics books.
3. ME. definitely the most stress-free of the lot. i like how the prof announced that he would drop a test score and a homework score on the last day of class.

i often forget what i want to say on class evaluations. i wanted to throw in the word “blitzkrieg” on for my physics class, but he didn’t do evals.

i just saw my finals week work schedule. what!! on tuesday, a 6.5-hour shift from 2:30 – 9pm, and a 7-hour shift on wednesday from 10:30 (right after my final) – 6! damn, there goes my tuesday for studying. not that i would’ve spent the whole time studying, but still. ickk.

so, yeah. i had four hours of sleep last night and the blitzkrieg studying starts today. friday night, all of saturday, and all of sunday. monday night, tuesday morning, and that’s pretty much it.

final stretch!

open letter to oprah, by shirley wu

May 18, 2009

as you might have heard, oprah is endorsing jenny mccarthy, former playboy playmate and now the poster-mom for anti-vaccination. it looks like oprah will be joining the axis evil, soon.

here’s a great letterwritten by a bioinformatics grad student at stanford.

yeah. let’s hope oprah listens. x_x

prison break ending

May 16, 2009

omg so sad.

i can’t believe i didn’t realize who the tombstone was for at the very end. i guess i didn’t want it to be true. : (

good ending, though. everyone was brought back into the fold. satisfactory and happy resolution, but with a bittersweet reminder of death at the end.

(maybe the stress killed him)

i got 3 points shy of 100 on my cee test. i’m kind of pissed that i lost those 3 points because i didn’t read the question carefully enough. shit! can’t be perfect. perfection != me.

i also forgot friction on my mechanics test. whoo, out the window. frick.

i think it’s interesting how the L word portrays men.
