when JC asked what i got in statics, i told him i got a 3.7. i just double-checked — i actually got a 3.8. whoops. (just for the record, this makes me seem modest.) a 3.7 is still surprisingly good, for any intensive class.

it was in astro that i got a 3.7, and i still can’t believe that i did well in that class. my prof asked really obscure questions on the test… “what is the internal structure of a neutron star?” “what is the magnetic field strength of the sun?” no idea… but i did know the temperature of the corona. i think it was 10 million K. i’m pretty sure i knew it at the time. : )

been listening to guano apes. german band. sandra nasic = awesome hardcore singer. a bit repetitive for my tastes, but i like the overall sound. good for rocking out.

sweet song

wish god was a woman by humane. pretty much the most non-misogynistic song you’ll ever hear.

my 5 favorite book characters

April 26, 2009

it was a thing on facebook. but facebook didn’t accommodate my numero uno favorite character, so i spurned it.

1. “Halloween” Gabriel Kennedy Hall (Idlewild Trilogy by Nick Sagan)
— an emo antagonist who reluctantly saves the world.
2. Harry Blackstone Dresden (The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher)
— your friendly neighborhood wizard, also with a rebel streak and a killer sense of humor.
3. Lani Garver (What Happened to Lani Garver by Carol Plum-Ucci)
— androgynous angel-in-disguise.
4. Bean (Ender’s Shadow by Orson Scott Card)
— a genetically-engineered pint-sized genius who will die from growing.
5. Vin (Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson)
— orphan assassin girl who kicks ass.

i read the new ‘dresden files’ book turncoat in three sittings at the bookstore. started reading ‘www: wake’, seems pretty cool. i love reading. i miss it.

in other news, quantum physics homework is bothering me. it sucks that the textbook is useless in this area. you know your textbook is useless when you resort to relying on wikipedia. and seriously, wikipedia makes sense. that’s just sad.

gonna sleep on it.

budget cuts at UW

April 19, 2009

“Scarcely any state, even those with worse economies, is punishing higher education funding more than the Washington Legislature is about to do. So long, first tier!”

yeah, 20 – 30%.

president mark emmert — a man with a $800,000 salary and who wants to rebuild the husky stadium? well, !@#$%. football coaches getting paid millions of dollars. oh yeah, UW is going down the drain, thanks a lot.

i was initially happy about the fact that the quantity and length of assignments would be reduced due to budget cuts. but looking at the big picture… students getting screwed over is not cool. why us??? probably since we have incredibly low tuition compared to other schools of comparable size and quality… we’re getting hit pretty hard.

on a brighter note, UW is so pretty in the spring, i could look at it all day.

joss whedon on humanism

April 15, 2009

via the friend atheist.com:

haha, i like the ending;

Faith is something we have to embrace. Faith in god means believing absolutely in something with no proof whatsoever. Faith in humanity means believing absolutely in something with a huge amount of proof to the contrary. We are the true believers.

rock on!

wee

April 11, 2009

done with taxes! simpler than i thought it would be. had to do it a couple times, though, some mess-ups.

bought some stuff from whole foods: two lip balms, one is vegan and smells like soap, the other is with shea butter; and a sea foam facial cleanser that will hopefully clear up the asymmetrical redness around my nose. i also wanted to buy every kind of non-dairy yogurt on the shelf.

yes i suppose i have work to do this weekend, but not that much, actually. i to finish my first TC paper and my quantum physics homework tomorrow… but papers are always left till the very end, and the rest of my physics homework consists of only two problems… though the last one is about probability amplitudes, which promises to be a bitch.

going to watch a movie! the lake house? perhaps a couple episodes of the west wing? so exciting.

today was sunny

April 9, 2009

guy plonking his motorcycle helmet on espresso bar, big smile across his face… it was ian! so fortuitous that i was making espresso at the moment and thus had an avenue of conversation. made my day. : )

been listening to the rasmus for the past couple of days, and i’ve been liking living in a world without you. interesting how he uses a british accent in the verse. and did i mention brand new day by ryan star? perhaps a while ago.

xkcd informed me that today is the 10th anniversary of the release of ‘the matrix’. perhaps i will watch it tonight.

it looks like i’m leaving quite a bit of work for this weekend. an essay due on monday. physics homework due on monday. taxes. (oh taxes!) head start on ME homework. oh well, i know what i’ll be doing on friday night. oh wait, i might going out to dinner with people…

dashed away, my dreams of a purple greatcoat

that’s all.
