i really like this performance of ‘hands held high’ by linkin park in london, 2008. flawless vocals from chester, yay.

weeds
December 27, 2008i’ve been watching weeds non-stop. here’s a funny clip about the iraq war and a colorfully-worded masturbation lesson.

hypothetical defense
December 26, 2008if breaking the law is what it takes to avoid being a victim, then that’s what i did.
the law couldn’t protect me in this situation, so i had to take matters into my own hands. i wasn’t about to passively sit back and watch myself be violated.
believe me, i like to follow the rules. but any woman with enough self-respect shouldn’t fear breaking the law when she fears for her own life.
if the law prefers that i took a journey into victimhood… then what kind of law is that?

hate crimes = : (
December 24, 2008Lesbian’s ‘Extreme’ Gang Rape Investigated in California.
descriptions could’ve been taken right out of boys don’t cry…
apparently,
“Anytime there is an anti-LGBT initiative, we tend to see spikes both in the numbers and the severity of attacks,” [Skolnik] said. “People feel this extra entitlement to act out their prejudice.”
also, the pope’s christmas speech? implying that homosexuality is a threat commensurate to disappearing rainforests?
so many things wrong with that comparison:
1. first of all, hypothetical counterexample: gays working to preserve the rainforest (assuming they exist) are a lot more productive than folks to who want them out of society. just as a point.
why does that make sense? because,
2. big gigantic planet on the precipice of … more than one avenue of self-destruction… vs harmless minority of the human population.
i mean big picture, come on.
and most obviously,
3. it’s christmas and the pope is preaching discrimination.
which is just sad.

jasmine mans
December 22, 2008performance of a poem called ‘i cried as if i were his daughter’ by jasmine mans.
needless to say, the verses are graphic. and intense.
i found her courage is fucking humbling, to say the least.

one nation voted against right to food in un assembly
December 21, 2008take a guess at that which ‘one nation’…
yup, that’s right: the u.s.
people gave michelle obama shit when she said something along the lines of ‘this is the first time in my adult life that i’ve really been proud of my country’… and it’s just that… you can’t turn a blind eye to shit like this. it’s fucking embarrassing, really. go figure, the richest country in the world, capitalist…

the world is… depressing
December 19, 2008i was about to say that ‘the news is depressing’, but we know that ‘the news’ really means ‘the world’.
- the story about the three plainclothes police officers assaulting a 12-year-old black girl and are now charging her with assault? (this was under the pretense of investigating a prostitution ring that involved only *white* girls, by the way). three men beating up a girl and victimizing her in the name of the law? like, what the fucking fuck??
- the bush administration has passed even more legislation restricting women’s access to abortion, further impairing women’s health care.
somebody mentioned that the people usually fight the government when the govt uses an excuse like ‘we gotta protect the children’ (e.g. when they’re trying to take away our rights), but in this case, people are using ‘we gotta protect the children’ to fight the government, effectively using their own argument to protect them.
somebody mentioned that the fact that this happened in texas didn’t surprise them… sad.
someone else surmised that this was actually a kidnapping attempt, which seems plausible, given the circumstances.
aghh.

trading an adventure in the snow for an adventure in linux
December 18, 2008splashy, i think, is no good. maybe it was because i forgot to rerun lilo after i had recompiled the kernel… and i had forgotten to change lilo’s vga to 791. and for a while i thought i had messed up the c compiler, which would have been bad … and completely nonsensical. and xauthority was messed up again… (note to self: chown the home directory).
i really liked ‘idlewild’ by nick sagan. can’t wait to read the sequels.
an adventure to attend a uw engineering info session sounded like fun, until i realized what a bitch the possibly hazardous return trip would be.

graaaaaades
December 17, 2008grades are out! and unfortunately, there are no gaping holes in aa 210 (a class that i’m trying to register for).
geology – wow i actually pulled a 4.0! sweeet. incredibly easy class. class size of 500 probably helped me stay ahead of the curve… = P
cse – 3.7. i was actually hoping for a 3.8, but a 3.7 is pretty rockin’. considering the fact that i missed an average of 3 points for every homework assignment, and homeworks are worth as much as the final… i like how this turned out.
physics – 3.7. wow! heh, if i hadn’t missed so many clicker questions, i would have gotten a 3.8. imagine that!
research – 3.5. heh, sad.
i actually forgot to check my grades soon after i heard that they were out, heh. went to play piano and unpack my cello instead.
